iphone 4g (apple) vs samsung i9000 galaxy s (android)

so after my sony ericsson broke (will not discuss how this occured), i have switched to 2 nokia phones.. waiting anxiously for the new iphone 4g to be released.

I've never owned an apple product before, to be honest was never interested in owning one. At first i was stunned by how popular apple was.. with almost every person owning an ipod and the gaining popularity of macs.

I did not want to conceed, i did not want to join the mainstream, i refused to own any apple product as in my mind - in the ipod/mp3 war, i always chose mp3s as i hated itunes, i hated the overpricing of ipods when you could get an mp3 that had much more storage and was more cost efficient, and all i had to do was drag and drop! SIMPLE! - infact, i was supported by my brother & cousin (who both are very technologically savvy) and we continued to purchase non-apple products i.e our creative mp3 players which date back from 2004 & are still extremely functionable.

Then my boyfriend got a iphone 3gs and i was rather impressed with it, i had not seen a phone like this or one that could compete (this again was due to the popularity of apple.. my whole group only had iphones). Therefore, in my mind - i was blind to other fierce competitors in the smartphone war.

This all changed the day i saw the HTC desire. I was even more impressed because i did not know about this device, i had heard about android devices - but clearly i did not know much about it. Finally, there was a phone i could turn to without having to switch to apple.

So then i researched.. i researched the HTC desire & then i came across the samsung i9000 galaxy s - i was rather iffy about it, knowing that samsung was rather disappointing with their phones in the past.

The first things that were said to me about with phone was the amazing 4" SUPER AMOLED screen + being the lightest smartphone out, weighing at 119g. Drawing me in, i did some more research

So my boyfriend and i are quite competitive, when i changed my mind about getting the iphone 4g and switching to enter the android world.. the thing he said to me was "you'll regret it.. nothing can beat the iphone 4g" of course, i was determined to prove him wrong.

The Iphone 4g offers:
  • an amazing apps store, which has an amazing variety of apps and right now are more advanced then the android market
  • it has a 3.5" retina display with 640 x 960 resolution
  • in my opinion the build is excellent - it LOOKS expensive and classy.
  • Thinnest smartphone
  • It also offers some degree of multitasking - of course not true multitasking as applications cannot run in the background,"its more pause the application at its current state for later access. There are exceptions for certain apps – such as the iPod or Pandora – they can actually play in the background" quoted by gsmarena
  • 5mp camera with LED flash
  • 1GHz processor, 512ram
  • comes in 16gb/32gb internal storage
  • bluetooth 2.1
Samsung i9000 Galaxy S offers:
  • 4" Super AMOLED screen, 480×800 resolution
  • Android apps store
  • The build is not as.. polished as the iphone 4g
  • It is the lightest smartphone (due to the super amoled)
  • True Multitasking
  • 1GHz processor, 512RAM
  • 8gb/16gb internal storage with microsd of up to 32 gb bringing it up to 48gb of storage
  • 5mp with NO flash
  • Bluetooth 3.0
blah blah blah.. not interesting!
here's where my rambling begins! :)

The screen is very debateable - while the iphone resolution is better and brighter, the super amoled features more saturated colours, better contrasts - blacks are blacker with better viewing angles. Better battery life? Thats debateable as well

What is this Facetime bullshit apple is suggesting they invented?
“People have been dreaming about video calling for decades. iPhone 4 makes it a reality.”
Factime is pretty much apples reinvention of videocalling .. which i'm sorry apple, this has already been invented.. YEARS ago! And this shit only works via wifi and only to other iphone 4g users.
Samsung galaxy s (SGS)
can do video calling via apps on the Market over WiFi, and 3G

GPS you ask? Iphone 4g, has google maps.. SGS has google maps with google navigation which includes turn by turn navigation with street view

No flash for either device yet, but with Android 2.2 Froyo being released and already on the nexus one and htc desire phones, flash is fully functional on android phones. Samsung have promised that Froyo will be available on the SGS

Also read a review in which Android 2.1 was deemed a disappointment and that Android 2.2 couldn't match up with apples iOS v4.0 - what a suprise this review was on an iphonehelp site? Needless to say, massive backlash occured
"
I’ve used both, a lot, as I own both phones. I can categorically say that Android 2.1 is obviously superior to iOS4. Android 2.2 is FAR superior to iOS4. If you compare the features added in iOS4 on Wikipedia you’ll see that nearly every one of them is playing catchup to Android 2.0."

DivX support? suprise suprise, available on SGS but not on iphone 4g

Reception issues.. i'm sure you all know that there is a particular way to hold the iphone so that you dont interfere with the reception. Iphone users may want to learn how to hold your phones properly

i lurrrrrrrrrrrrrve swype! definitely important for me, iphone does have a knockoff - although you have to open up the application, type using swype then copy and paste the text into an sms - not as efficient as the SGS

iphone is too dependent on itunes which as you know if you have read before, i dislike. It can't be used as an extenal drive & files can only be transfered via itunes

FM radio is standard on SGS, you'd need to download it on the iphone

HD recording on both phones

iphone has this microSIM card crap.. useless and unpractical
if ure phone breaks & u need to send it off to get fixed wtf are u gonna do with a microSIM card?

OMG! u can make folders now!! with 12 items in each folder :O :O :O
sorry apple, android had this feature with their very first update.. way to step up the game!

apples interpretation of "multitasking" although they did admit it would not be the hardcore multitasking users would expect - however, multitasking is fully functional on all android devices

android is highly customizable WITH widgets
Don't like the homescreen? install an alternative
Don't like the music player? install an alternative
Don't like anything stock? install an alternative

With the iphone, your stuck with it.. no widgets that come standard

Google services? ahem *android*

However, if you look at the SGS - indeed the design itself is a ripoff of the iphone! Although, with Launcherpro.. you can customise the home menu and it looks tonnes better!!
& It has a plasticy feel to it, which i dont like
& once again, the apps store is not as established - i love my games and the android market does not live upto my expectations within the games department. The necessary apps like task killers etc are all there though. Android is definitely catching up though - it is gaining popularity rapidly with 100k apps announced.
No flash on camera is a downside, and i will miss the mute button that is present on the iphone

To sum up, the iphone 4g does not really introduce anything new here - apple releases an average of 1 phone per year and the results are a let down compared to other smartphone manufacturers which release multiple phones much regularly

People will still go nuts over this phone, people will still line up to get this phone. And why? Maybe due to apples marketing strategies, or Apple's support for their phones, imagine if .. lets say HTC invested all their time & marketing into 1 single product. Then they would definitely be a big competitor for Apple.

IMO - The apps store is definitely the only reason to go with apple, but with android catching up quickly, this will soon be irrelevant. While this phone hasnt been released in Australia yet - it is quite evident that the prices wont be able to compare with the SGS, nor any other phone, as it will be the most expensive smartphone out. The pricing will be outrageous, and for what reason? Cos Apple can do so, and people will still buy it.

I could spend less money, and get the Samsung i9000 Galaxy S that beats the iphone in every hardware aspect & is much more flexible
